Artist: James Brown
Song: I’m a Greedy Man
Artist: Art Blakley and the Jazz Messengers
Song: Moanin’
Something about the early hours into the day that puts me in the mood for jazz.
Artist: Gardens & Villas
Song: Spacetime
After watching a pretty grim film listening to Clair de lune feels good.
Song: Summertime/Motherless Child
Artist: Mahalia Jackson
I love this song and I still think my favourite version is sung by Sam Cooke. However there are a lot of great versions of this song. Mahalia Jackson combined the song with Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child. It was traditionally a slave/gospel song. With her voice she brings both a sad and yet refreshing feeling.
Luckily I got to see a wonderful documentary called Gershwin’s Summertime: The Song that Captured the World. If you live in the UK you can still watch it on BBC’s iPlayer.
Artist: Bombino
Le Possion Rouge do not disappoint. I would be interested in seeing this band play.
Artist: Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings
Song: 100 Days, 100 Nights
Album 100 Days, 100 Nights
I discovered this band through a recommendation. When talking about how I was musically blue balls’d the night before. Described to me as the female James Brown. So I finally got round to listening and man oh man is it good. An actual soul singer in this day and age. I am truly enjoying it. It’s giving me that dancing itch.
Great double CD summer selection by two of the best blogs in the world, ghostcapital and Holy Warbles.
“78 revelations, ethniquities, gospelarians, librarians, gloops, gleeps, magnetique tape, ost, dmt, kvlt, spectral string bands, psychedelique funkenfuzz, songbirds, disembodied voices, tape echo, plate reverb, lepyrlymns, field recordings, holy ghosts of electricity & cloven tongues of fire.”
I’ve been giving this a listen for a week or so and I’m really enjoying it. Has an old feel to it and a nice chilled out feel. Some interesting songs as well.
