Song: Summertime/Motherless Child

Artist: Mahalia Jackson

I love this song and I still think my favourite version is sung by Sam Cooke. However there are a lot of great versions of this song. Mahalia Jackson combined the song with Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child. It was traditionally a slave/gospel song. With her voice she brings both a sad and yet refreshing feeling.

Luckily I got to see a wonderful documentary called Gershwin’s Summertime: The Song that Captured the World. If you live in the UK you can still watch it on BBC’s iPlayer.

Panorama: Sensationalist reporting over public sector pay ?

So this is news once more on the topic of how several thousand public sector employee’s earn more than the Prime Minister. Just watched the Panorama episode on this and some of the examples they gave are ridiculous. However it could just be the horrible narrator who doesn’t know how to tell the story in a voice other than shock and condemnation.

Examples:

Prime Minister earns £143,000

Head teacher who earns £153,000 a year, but he runs two schools full time and he helped turn around a school that was about to be closed.

GP’s get more than the PM but do you really want to drive away doctors from the NHS and have a more dominate private health care system?

Now the BBC execs being paid £600k+ I’m not really sure how that works. I mean I don’t really think the BBC has produced a lot of good programming lately but it certainly hit the fan like ITV.

The only real outrage I can drum up is probably over the executives that are hired for £400K+ to look for cuts they can make to save money. i don’t understand how you can really justify this. Hiring somebody to do a job that the council should be doing… If I understand correctly they aren’t full time either.

________

Panorama over the years has come a bit sensational. It feels like it has lost its journalist edge in favour for flashy entertainment. It use to be breaking news and hard journalism and now well frankly this episode on Public pay is a bit old hat. Didn’t fit the narrative they wanted to push back when we found how much big BBC stars and executives make. It felt like a news article from the daily mail rather than the financial times. Incoherent in its argument with a strange overtone. It certainly wasn’t one of the most well made pieces of reporting. This could be due to the fact they only had 30mins to report or if this was due to the fact they only had 30mins worth of material to report.

Game: Questionaut created by Aminata Design for the BBC Bite Size Education
Aminata Design make some lovely point and click adventure games. Most known is game is probably Machinarium. It was originally made for kids from the age of 7-11 years old. Playing it really makes me realise the knowledge I have taken for granted. They are all fairly easy questions till you are staring blankly at the screen wondering if you really did learn this at 7yrs old. The game is free to play just click through for the link.

Issues with free speech in the UK ?

Libel laws in the UK apparently are horrendous and it is one reason why so many news sources are anon. Although saying that Journalism in the UK is getting pretty farcical. I can’t believe how ridiculous it is that such an insignificant thing stands in the way of discussion.
